This full-day Mount Sinai tour St Catherine Monastery combines a challenging midnight trek to catch the world-famous sunrise with a visit to one of the world’s oldest working Christian monasteries.
Your Mount Sinai tour begins in the evening with a comfortable transfer to the base of the mountain. The hike to the summit takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. You have two paths to choose from: the ‘Camel Path’ (an easier, wider trail) or the ‘Steps of Penitence’ (3,750 stone steps for a more direct route).
Reaching the summit before dawn is a life-changing experience. As the sun rises over the jagged peaks of the Sinai Peninsula, the landscape is bathed in a golden light that reveals the raw beauty of the desert. This Mount Moses hike sunrise session offers incredible photography opportunities and a moment of profound peace.
After descending the mountain, your Mount Sinai tour St Catherine Monastery continues with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site at the mountain’s base. Built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, St Catherine Monastery Egypt is a fortress of faith and history.
During your guided tour, you will see:

The Transfiguration Church: Housing a magnificent collection of ancient mosaics and icons.
The Well of Moses: An ancient water source still used today.
The Library: Home to the world’s second-largest collection of early codices and manuscripts, surpassed only by the Vatican.

The hike is considered moderately challenging. The climb to the summit of Mount Moses takes about 3 to 4 hours. Most of the trail is a gradual incline known as the “Camel Path,” which is easy to navigate. However, the final 750 steps (the “Steps of Penitence”) to the summit are steep and requires a good level of fitness. If you find the climb difficult, camels are available for hire to take you most of the way up.
To experience the famous sunrise, the Mount Sinai tour St Catherine Monastery usually begins with a hotel pickup between 9:00 PM and 11:00 PM (depending on your location in Sharm or Dahab). You will reach the base around midnight and begin the hike in the dark to ensure you reach the 2,285-meter summit before the first light of dawn.
Proper clothing is the most important part of your Mount Sinai tour. Even if it is warm at the coast, temperatures at the summit can drop below freezing in Winter. We recommend dressing in layers, wearing a heavy winter jacket, a hat, and gloves. Sturdy hiking boots or high-grip sports shoes are essential for the rocky terrain.
Yes. While the Mount Sinai tour St Catherine Monastery is famous for the sunrise hike, we can customize the trip for those who only wish to visit the monastery. The monastery usually opens to visitors at 9:00 AM and closes at 11:30 AM (closed on Fridays and Sundays). This allows you to see the Burning Bush and the Transfiguration Church without the midnight trek.
Yes, for safety and legal reasons, a local Bedouin guide is mandatory for the hike up Mount Sinai. Our tour includes an experienced Bedouin guide who knows the mountain trails perfectly and will ensure you reach the summit safely and on time for the sunrise.
During your Mount Sinai tour, you will find small “Bedouin Cafes” along the trail. these huts sell hot tea, coffee, water, snacks, and even provide blankets for rent. There are basic toilet facilities available at several points along the path and at the summit area, though we recommend bringing small change (Egyptian Pounds) for use.
